If you’re using Pinterest as part of your marketing strategy, keyword research should be the very first thing you do when setting up your profile, your boards and in creating your pins. This post will go over the 4 of the best methods for Pinterest keyword research.
Pin design is important for succeeding on Pinterest but if no one is finding your content, your pretty designs will be for nothing. You need to research how Pinterest users are looking for content like yours.
If you’ve already got a Pinterest account and have organized your boards by topic within your niche then you can create a keyword bank on spreadsheet in order to optimize your board descriptions and pin descriptions and, for future content that your prospects are interested in. As you write about new related topics, you can do additional Pinterest keyword research to add to your spreadsheet.
1) Pinterest Search Bar Research
The first and easiest method for doing keyword research is using the Pinterest search bar directly and seeing what autosuggestions come up for you. Don’t forget to change the drop down to the right of the search bar to “all pins”.
Start typing some keywords and see what key phrase suggestions come up. These autosuggestions are based on what Pinterest users have commonly searched for. Write down keywords or phrases that are relevant to your audience and content.
Also, think about what you would be searching for if you were in your customer’s shoes. For example, if you’ve got a piece of content about SEO, don’t just focus on finding keywords related to SEO but think about the problem a user might be trying to solve. In this case, they probably want to learn how to get more people to see their content so try a term such as “how to get more views on Pinterest”.
You can also try the ABCD method for additional recommendations. For example, if you are a relationship coach and write about relationship issues, type ‘relationship a’ to see what auto-completes, then type ‘relationship b’ and continue through the whole alphabet.
2) Pinterest Trends Tool
The Pinterest Trends Tool is an excellent tool for seeing how your keywords are currently trending on Pinterest and if there are any other relevant trending keywords you can use. For example, “dog treats”. You might find additional key phrases such as “homemade dog treats”, “peanut butter dog treats”, “frozen dog treats” that you can use for creating additional content and pins.
3) Pinterest Ads Campaign Keywords
A great way to generate new and relevant keywords is by using the keyword fields in Pinterest’s advertising campaigns. For this method, you need to have a business account to access the Ads menu on Pinterest.
Start going through the process to create an ad campaign and when you get to the keyword section, start typing your keyword in the search bar and it will give you all kinds of additional keyword suggestions along with the search volume. Then, copy and paste all the suggestions into a document or spreadsheet. Don’t worry, you don’t have to actually continue with the process of creating an ad and you can pause the campaign if you’re nervous about it.
4) Keyword Research Tools
There are many keyword research tools that offer free or paid options for doing keyword research. Although these options are off the Pinterest platform, the keyword suggestions will be relevant to your blog or YouTube videos as well as Pinterest. Try KeySearch.co or Ubersuggest by Neil Patel or the Google Keyword Research Tool.
Most of the keyword research methods mentioned above are specific to the Pinterest platform but depending on your niche, you may need to go off the platform and use one of the keyword research tools for additional suggestions. But try the Pinterest platform first because it’s its own unique search engine and there are differences in the way people use the platform compared to Google.
